Doris, Sowinski Qualify for NCAA Championships

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa seniors Troy Doris and Erik Sowinski will head to Nampa, Idaho, this weekend for the NCAA Championships. The NCAA announced the qualifiers Monday.

Doris, a senior from Bollingbrook, Ill., will compete in the triple jump. Doris recorded his season best mark of 53-5 (16.28m) at the Razorback Invitational on Jan. 27. He currently holds the school record in the event (54-0; 16.46m). Doris took the Big Ten triple jump title with a leap of 52-1 ¾ (15.89m), and earned first team all-Big Ten honors.

Sowinski, a native of Waukesha, Wis., will compete in the 800 meters. Sowinski won the Big Ten title in the event with a time of 1:47.90. His time of 1:47.62 in the preliminary round broke his previous school record and set a Big Ten Championships record. He earned first team all-Big Ten honors for his performance. Sowinski also holds the school record in the 600 meters (1:16.91).

“These are two of the most deserving athletes on our team,” said director of track and field Larry Wieczorek. They both go into the NCAA Championships as team captains, school record holders and Big Ten Champions. We think they are ready to compete with the best athletes in the nation, and we have high expectations for what they can accomplish.”

The NCAA Championships will be held at the Jacksons Indoor Track in Nampa, Idaho, on Mar. 9-10.
