IOWA CITY – University of Iowa junior men’s gymnast Anton Gryshayev has been named Big Ten Co-Gymnast of the Week with Penn State’s Felix Aronovich. The announcement was made today by the Big Ten office. Iowa’s last gymnast of the week was Geoff Reins in 2009.
Gryshayev led the Hawkeyes at No. 9 Nebraska on Saturday, as he crushed the school record on still rings. The Littleton, Colo., native posted a 15.750 on the event to place first by eight and a half tenths. Only three scores this season, nationally, have been higher than that mark.
The top seven scores on rings in program history have all been set by Gryshayev. Thanks to Gryshayev’s stellar routine, the Hawkeyes won the event title on rings, 59.750-58.050. Gryshayev’s previous high score on rings was 15.250. The Hawkeyes set a new season high team score, 343.350, against the Cornhuskers in large part due to Gryshayev’s efforts.
Gryshayev and the No. 12 Hawkeyes will return to action in two weeks, hosting the Big Ten Championships in Carver-Hawkeye Arena on April 6 and 7. Both days of competition will begin at 7 p.m. (CT), and will be televised live by the Big Ten Network.
