NFL's Kansas City Chiefs Keep 1 Eye on Iowa Football

March 26, 2012

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Kansas City Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli likens the way Kirk Ferentz runs the University of Iowa football program to that of an NFL team.

It’s for that reason that Pioli makes it a point to attend the Iowa Pro Day each March to see the lastest crop of Hawkeye draft eligible players. In each of the last two drafts, the Chiefs have selected Iowa players. They took tight end Tony Moeaki in the third round in 2010 and quarterback Ricky Stanzi in the fifth round pick last season.

“I know I certainly will feel better about players from this program because it’s like an NFL program,” Pioli said. “Kirk runs things here like an NFL program. The other thing is, the players that come out of here, I know there’s not going to be a lot of surprises with them. I’m going to know what they are and who they are.”
