THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa track and field teams head to Des Moines, Iowa, for the Drake Relays on April 26-28. The event will be held at the Jim Duncan Track and the Johnny Bright Field and is scheduled to begin Thursday at 9:30 a.m. (CT).
IN THE RANKINGS
The men’s track team is ranked 20th in the USTFCCCA national rankings.
AMONG THE NCAA TOP TEN
The Hawkeyes are ranked in the NCAA top 10 in five events. Senior Troy Doris is fourth in the triple jump. Doris reached the 53-6 1/2 (16.32m) mark at the Battle on the Bayou on April 7. Senior Erik Sowinski currently ranks fourth in the 800 meters, running a school record time of 1:47.02 at the Battle on the Bayou. Senior Jeffery Herron’s school record setting performance in the high jump (7-4 1/4; 2.24m) currently ranks fourth in the nation. Herron recorded the mark at the Battle on the Bayou. Freshman Gabe Hull’s discus toss of 195-11 (59.73m) ranks fifth in the nation. Hull recorded the mark at the Tom Botts Invitational on April 14.
ATOP THE BIG TEN
The Hawkeyes have 14 athletes ranked among the top five in the Big Ten. Those athletes include Justin Austin (3rd; 100m), Erik Sowinski (5th 400m; 1st 800m), Jordan Mullen (2nd; 110m hurdles), Dan Davis (3rd; 110m hurdles), Ethan Holmes (3rd 110m hurdles; 3rd 400m hurdles), Jeffery Herron (1st; high jump), Graham Valdes (5th; high jump), Troy Doris (1st; triple jump), Gabe Hull (2nd; discus), Matt Byers (1st; javelin), Ashley Liverpool (2nd; 400m), McKenzie Melander (1st; 5000m), Mareike Schrulle (2nd; 5000m), and Megan Ranegar (5th; 5000m).
TUTSON BREAKS DISCUS RECORD
Junior Majesty Tutson broke her own school record in the discus special on April 20. Tutson recorded a toss of 172-11 (52.72m) to top her previous record of 172-3 (52.52m), which she recorded at the 2011 Big Ten Championships.
HULL CONTINUES TO IMPROVE
Freshman Gabe Hull recorded a personal best toss in the discus at the Musco Twilight on April 21. Hull’s mark of 192-7 (58.70m) ranks fifth all-time at Iowa. This marks the second straight week Hull has recorded a personal best in the event.
MELANDER CLIMBS ALL-TIME LIST
Senior McKenzie Melander ran a personal best time of 9:21.59 in the 3,000 meters at the Musco Twilight on April 21, beating her previous best of 9:34.13. Melander’s time ranks third all-time at Iowa.
