Hawkeyes Set to Hit the Links in French Lick

THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa women’s golf team opens play at the Big Ten Championships on Friday in French Lick, Ind. The Hawkeyes tee off on the 6,156 yard, par 72 Donald Ross Course at the French Lick Resort at 9 a.m. (CT). Iowa will begin on the 10th hole. The 12 teams will play 36-holes on Friday, followed by 18-holes on Saturday and Sunday. Live scoring will be available on the women’s golf schedule page at hawkeyesports.com.

THE LINEUP
Senior Chelsea Harris, juniors Kristi Cardwell and Gigi DiGrazia, sophomore Karly Grouwinkel and freshmen Shelby Phillips and Lauren English will play for the Hawkeyes. Iowa used the same lineup last weekend at the Lady Buckeye Invitational.

HE COMPETITION
The Big Ten boasts two teams in the top 25 of the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. Ohio State is ranked 19th, while Michigan State is tabbed No. 23. Purdue (33) and Northwestern (44) were included in the top 50 of the poll. Purdue has won the last five individual championships.

BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS’ NEUTRAL SITE
The Big Ten Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships will both be held on April 27-29 at the French Lick Resort. This marks the first time that both the men and women will compete at the same time and on a neutral site. The French Lick Resort has been awarded the 2012, 2013 and 2014 Big Ten Championships.

LAST YEAR AT THE BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Hawkeyes placed 11th at the 2011 Big Ten Championships, hosted by Northwestern at the 6,303 yard, par 72 Lake Shore Country Club in Glencoe, Ill. Iowa fired a 1,261 (318-316-315-312, +109). Michigan State was crowned conference champions after shooting a 1,180 (306-290-295-289, +28).

FRENCH LICK EXPERIENCE
Iowa has already played the Donald Ross Course at the French Lick Resort this season. The Hawkeyes shot 926 (307-309-310) while competing in the Lady Northern Invitational on Oct. 10-11. Junior Kristi Cardwell paced the Hawkeyes with a 54-hole score of 229 (78-70-81, +16).

HAWKEYE 72-HOLE RECORDS
The Hawkeyes will play in a 72-hole tournament for the first time this season at the Big Ten Championships. The team 72-hole record is 1,223, set at the Big Ten Championships in 2006. Tyrette Metzendorf holds the individual 72-hole record. Metzendorf fired a 295 at the 2008 Big Ten Championships.

HAWKEYES HISTORY AT THE BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Iowa has placed in the top five of the Big Ten Championships eight times since 1982. The Hawkeyes won their only Big Ten title in 1991 when they shot a 1,238 in Madison, Wisc. Stacey Bergman is the only Iowa student-athlete in program history to win an individual championship. Bergman carded a 299 en route to winning in 1998.

47 STORKE IMPROVEMENT
The Hawkeyes saw their score improve by 47 strokes at the Lady Buckeye Invitational on April 21-22. Iowa fired a 950 (325-313-312, +86) on the Scarlet Course at The Ohio State University Golf Club. The Hawkeyes shot a 997 (326-331-340, +133) at the Lady Buckeye Invitational in 2011.

CARDWELL EARNS BIG TEN HONOR
Junior Kristi Cardwell earned her first career Big Ten Golfer of the Week honor on April 12 after her performance at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic on April 9-11. Cardwell is the first Hawkeye golfer to earn the award since current assistant coach Laura Cilek received the accolade March 17, 2010. Cardwell shared the award with Paula Reto of Purdue.
