Strong Recruiting Class to Join Hawkeyes

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team signed seven student-athletes to National Letters of Intent during the spring signing period, head coach Marc Long announced Wednesday.

“Our incoming class represents an outstanding and talented group of individuals,” said Long. “They’ve proven themselves as winners in the pool and classroom. We’re excited to have them join our program. The future looks bright for the Hawkeyes.”

Maddie Bro, a native of Ames, Iowa, was an All-American and state champion in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke at Ames High School. Bro, a Junior National qualifier, was also named the Iowa State Athlete of the Year by the High School Swim Coaches Association. She is a three-time scholastic All-American and a published journalist. Bro is coached by Dan Flannery (HS) and Dave Joensen (USS) at Central Iowa Aquatics.

Colleen Champa, a native of Algonquin, Ill., attended Dundee Crown High School, where she was a state finalist in 100 breaststroke and school record holder in the 200 IM. Champa is a Junior National qualifier and a three-time team MVP. She is coached by Laura Wayman at Palatine Park District.

Maggie Hofstadter, a native of Irvine, Calif., was a state finalist and All-American at University High School, where she led her team to state team titles in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Hofstadter is a Junior National qualifier in the 50 free and a scholastic All-American. She is coached by Robin Jacobsen at Orange County Waves.

Ashley Horodyski is a native of Littleton, Colo., and attends Columbine High School, where she was a state finalist. Horodyski is coached by Kristy Marosy (HS) and Matt Beck (USS) at Highlands Ranch Aquatics.

Olivia Kabacinski, a native of La Porte, Ind., is a 10-time individual All-American and three-time state champion at Chesteron High School. She is a member of the National Honor Society and is a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American. Kabacinski is also a Senior National qualifier and is coached by Kevin Kinel at Duneland Swim Club.

Allie Orvis, a native of Decorah, Iowa, holds 10 school records and was the Iowa state champion in the 200 IM in 2010. She was also first team all-state, varsity MVP, a Junior National qualifier and a USA swimming Scholastic All-American at Decorah High School. Orvis is coached by Stephanie Huber (HS) and Doug Colin at Dubuque Area Swimmin’ Hurricanes.

Jennifer Weigand, a native of La Grange Park, Ill., and is an all-state and an All-American swimmer at Lyons Township High School. Weigand, who also played water polo, will be joining her brother, Patrick and her sister, Hilary, who are current Hawkeye swimmers. Weigand is coached by Scott Walker, Kurt Johns and Casey Hnatiuk at Lyons Swim Club.
