IOWA CITY, Iowa — Bailey Rhodes of Midlothian, Texas, and Iowa City native Gevevieve Krier won the respective men’s and women’s divisions at the National Iowa Varsity Club’s inaugural “Fitness for Life” 5k run last weekend at the Ashton Cross Country Course.

Flanked by Herky the Hawk and members of the University of Iowa spirit squad, Rhodes crossed the finish line in 20:54.2 to earn the overall title. Krier was the top women’s finisher, clocking a 25:56.7.

Both participants were among the 11 winners from various age divisions presented championship awards by Iowa director of track and field Larry Wieczorek, Varsity Club president-elect Jodi Parsons, and Bill Ashton, the namesake of the University of Iowa’s Ashton Cross Country Course.

The “Fitness for Life” initiative is designed to develop positive habits that will lead to a lifetime of healthy choices and active lifestyles for athletes of all ages. A portion of the “Fitness for Life” proceeds will be used to benefit the Iowa City Community School District and Iowa City Regina K-6 physical education programs.

“We had a great group of people come out to support this first-year event,” said Les Steenlage, executive director of the National Iowa Varsity Club. “It was great to see everyone bring so much energy to the event because that’s what the Fitness for Life initiative is all about. We want people of all ages to embrace the idea of enjoying a healthy and active lifestyle. This event allowed us to promote that mission while benefitting the Iowa City school district’s physical education programs. It was a great success and we very much look forward to making next year bigger and better.”
