IOWA CITY, Iowa – — Talk to just about anyone in the coaching profession – pee-wee, high school, college, or in the NFL – and they’ll tell you: At its core, coaching is teaching and the successful coaches are, at their core, successful teachers.
There’s no denying Greg Davis is a successful coach. The resume for the University of Iowa’s first-year offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach includes 38 years of experience accumulated by stops at, among others, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Georgia, North Carolina, and Texas, where he spent 12 seasons cranking out some of the most productive offenses in the history of the Big 12 Conference. Frankly, you don’t stalk the sidelines of college football programs of this stature if you aren’t among the best in your business.

Davis – the latest member of the coaching staff to be featured in the UI’s “Coach Speak” video series – was named the national assistant coach of the year in 2005 when he made his second of three appearances in the Rose Bowl and the Texas Longhorns defeated Southern Cal in the Bowl Championship Series national championship game. All counted, during a coaching career that started at Louisiana’s Barbe High School in 1973, Davis has been a part of 18 teams that participated in bowl games ranging from the Rose (3) to the Holiday (4) to the Cotton (3) and the Feista (1).
He’s tutored three finalists for the Heisman Trophy and two winners of the Walter Camp Football Foundation Player of the Year, the Maxwell Award, the Davey O’Brien Award, the Manning Award, the and Archie Griffin Award. And, as rich as the football tradition is at Texas, the Longhorns have had just five quarterback start a game in the National Football League – and three of them were products of Davis’s schooling.
“When you’re looking for quarterbacks, you’re always looking for several things: They have to be accurate with the football, they need to be athletic enough to avoid the rush, they need to be intelligent.”

The man can coach…and – based on what fans of the Hawkeyes’ will see when they watch Davis’s “Coach Speak” video – it’s pretty clear that the man knows how to teach.
“This is the concept…” Davis says during one slice of his “Coach Speak” video.
“It’s a bunch of simple things…” he suggests in another.
“When you get to that decision area…” the father of two offers in yet another.
“When you’re looking for quarterbacks, you’re always looking for several things: They have to be accurate with the football, they need to be athletic enough to avoid the rush, they need to be intelligent,” says professor/coach Davis.
