IOWA CITY, Iowa — With the possible exception of pure, gold-medal-like talent, nothing beats experience. It’s the trump card in just about every profession including coaching at the BCS level of college football.
Experience means knowledge.
Experience means points of reference.
Experience means calm in the face of a storm.
With that as the backdrop, it should come as no surprise that when Kirk Ferentz was shuffling his coaching staff and its responsibilities last winter, he plucked the coach with the most experience on his staff – Reese Morgan – and plugged him into a new assignment.
Morgan, Iowa’s offensive line coach for the last nine seasons, has been coaching the sport of football since 1973, the last 13 years as a member of Ferentz’s staff at the UI.
He’s coached teams to high school state championships and teams to Big Ten Conference championships.
He’s coached student-athletes to all-state status and all-America status.
He’s helped guide a handful of the most determined and driven of his student-athletes to opportunities at the “Next Level” – the National Football League.

Morgan began his 14th campaign in Iowa City tackling a hot spot for Ferentz: The defensive line.
“I’m excited about the opportunity,” Morgan says during the most recent installment in the UI’s “Coach Speak” series of videos.
“It’s really important that we have a young man that’s passionate about the game of football, a guy that prepares and wants to be the best. A guy that’s willing to put in the extra time and hard work and invest that time in becoming the best player he can be through fundamentals and technique.”
Morgan also suggests strongly that future Hawkeyes care about their teammates and understand the importance of being part of a team. He suggests that those are characteristics of the football program at the UI.
Morgan also notes that student-athletes in the sport of football benefit from three sources of success: Outstanding leadership on and off the playing field from Ferentz, a superior strength training and conditioning program under the guidance of Chris Doyle, and a system that has a history of success of producing talent capable of competing successfully at the professional level.
