Sept. 24, 2012

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa freshman goalkeeper Meg Goodson was named Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week following her role in Iowa’s two conference victories over the weekend. The announcement was made Monday by the league’s office. It’s Iowa’s (11-1-0, 2-1-0) second weekly award of the season, and the first of Goodson’s career.

Goodson earned the win between the posts in Iowa’s victories against Indiana and Purdue. Goodson has a 5-1-0 record in goal.

“The goalkeeper rotation has been great with Meg and Hannah (Clark), and Meg made some nice saves to earn shutouts in both her halves this weekend,” Iowa head coach Ron Rainey said. “It’s a great award for her and the team.”

The Van Meter, Iowa, native started and played the first half in Iowa’s 1-0 shutout of Indiana. Goodson tallied four saves as Iowa registered its seventh shutout of the season. She also held Purdue without a goal, playing the first half of Iowa’s 3-2 win against Purdue. Goodson made a diving save in the 40th minute to keep the Hawkeyes ahead.

Goodson ranks third in the Big Ten in save percentage (.879) and fifth in goals against average (0.80), and she leads Iowa with 29 saves.

Goodson and the Hawkeyes return to action on Friday, facing Michigan (9-2-0, 3-0-0) in Ann Arbor, Mich. Start time is set for 7 p.m. Iowa will also face Michigan State (7-3-1, 1-2-0) on Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT) in East Lansing, Mich.
