IOWA CITY, Iowa — Brandon Scherff, the starting left tackle for the University of Iowa football team, had surgery Sunday morning and his expected to miss “a couple months,” according to head coach Kirk Ferentz.
Ferentz, who met with hawkeyesports.com Sunday evening, said additional tests are being run on another offensive lineman — Andrew Donnall — and more will be known about his knee injury later in the week.
“It was a tough night all-around,” said Ferentz, referring to Iowa’s 38-14 loss to Penn State on Oct. 20, coupled with the injuries to the Hawkeye offensive linemen. “Penn State came in and played a fantastic game and not much went right for us. One of the toughest things we endured is the fact we had a couple injuries.”
The play of special teams continues to impress Ferentz. The Hawkeyes blocked a Nittany Lion field goal attempt, and Jordan Cotton returned a kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown. In the last two games, Cotton is averaging 39.4 yards on five kickoff returns.
“It’s great to get mileage from the kickoff return team the last two weeks,” Ferentz said. “Even when the game was out of hand, the guys were competing out there.”
Ferentz complimented Louis Trinca-Pasat and Dominic Alvis for their roles in blocking a fourth-quarter 43-yard field goal attempt by Penn State.
“Our challenge is to get back up on our feet,” said Ferentz, previewing an Oct. 27 meeting at Northwestern. “We can’t let this linger because we are playing a team that has done a good job against us since 2005, and they play very, very well. It will be a tough task for us; Northwestern has an attack that is tough to defend.”
Ferentz also mentioned milestones surpassed by seniors Micah Hyde (200 tackles) and Keenan Davis (100 receptions).
