IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa men’s swimmer Roman Trussov has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. The honor is the first of Trussov’s career and the first for a Hawkeye men’s swimmer.
The Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan, native earned the accolade after posting two first, one second and one fifth place finish in Iowa’s dual meet at 13th-ranked Minnesota on Nov. 2. Trussov took first place in the 100 breast (55.08) and 200 breast (2:00.60) and finished second in the 200 medley relay (1:29.93).
The 100 breast time is an NCAA ‘B’ qualifying standard, while his 200 breast time of 2:00.60 is the sixth fastest in Iowa history. The freshman also swam a leg of the 200-medley relay that posted the 10th fastest time in the Hawkeye record books.
Iowa returns to action Nov. 30 through Dec. 2, hosting the Hawkeye Invitational at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Pool.
