COLUMBUS, Ohio — The University of Iowa women’s gymnastics team opened Big Ten competition against Ohio State Saturday night. The Hawkeyes improved their team score by nearly a point from last weekend, but it was not enough to overcome the No. 21 Buckeyes. Iowa fell 194.925-194.200.
“We had a completely different team take the floor tonight,” said head coach Larissa Libby. “Their demeanor, their confidence, the way they carried themselves throughout the competition is a team that will be on the Big Ten podium. We are still making mistakes that champions do not make, and we have to fix them now.”
The Hawkeyes started steady with a 48.750 on the bars. Freshman Alie Glover led off with a 9.775. Sophomore Sydney Hoerr and senior Emma Stevenson matched Glover’s 9.775, tying for fourth place. Iowa also counted a 9.725 from sophomore Emma Willis and a 9.700 from senior Kaitlynn Urano.
In the second rotation Iowa tallied a 49.050 on the vault. Willis won the event title with a career high 9.900. Glover scored a 9.825, and Hoerr recorded a 9.800. Freshman Alyssa Lopez improved from last week, earning a 9.775. Freshman Kyra Trowbridge posted a 9.750.
The Hawkeyes stole the Buckeyes’ lead on the floor with a 48.750. Trowbridge led the way for Iowa with a 9.850, placing third. Urano and Stevenson earned a 9.800, tying for fourth. Glover stepped out-of-bounds but recorded a 9.525.
Iowa fell behind on the beam, finishing with a 47.600. Hoerr and Urano paced the Hawkeyes with a 9.750, and Glover recorded a 9.675. The Hawkeyes counted a 9.325 from Willis and a 9.15 from Trowbridge.
Ohio State’s Melanie Schaffer captured the all-around title with a 39.250. Hoerr, Iowa’s lead all-around scorer, earned a career-high 39.100. Glover posted a 38.800 for third, and Willis scored a 38.050 for fourth.
The GymHawks will travel to University Park, Pa. to take on No. 27 Penn State on Saturday, Jan. 26. Action is slated to start at 6 p.m. (CT) inside Rec Hall.
