Hawkeyes Finish 5th at Windy City Invite

CHICAGO — The University of Iowa men’s gymnastics team opened the 2013 season Saturday night at the 43rd annual Windy City Invitational. The 10th-ranked Hawkeyes scored a 422.350 to finish fifth in the competition. The event was hosted by UIC at the Physical Education Building in Chicago.

Iowa had three gymnasts earn first place finishes. Freshman Matt Loochtan scored a 15.400 on the floor exercise to lead all. It marked the highest individual score on any event during the meet. Senior Anton Gryshayev scored a 15.150 on rings. Senior Javier Balboa posted a score of 15.200 on parallel bars.

Loochtan, an Illinois native, placed fifth in the all-around (82.300). Adrian de los Angeles of Michigan won the all-around title with a 88.400.

The Hawkeyes posted a score of 71.900 on floor, in addition to a 71.900 on rings. Both scores marked team highs.

Iowa also had a solid performance on vault (71.700) and on the parallel bars (71.150). Sophomore Brandon Field (14.600) and Loochtan (14.400) paced the Hawkeyes on vault.

Iowa recorded a score of 69.550 on the high bar and 66.150 on the pommel horse.

The Hawkeyes return to action on Jan. 25 at the Metroplex Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas.
