National I-Club to Celebrate 75th Anniversary in 2013

Jan. 24, 2013

Iowa City, Iowa – 2013 marks the 75th anniversary of the National I-Club, a major milestone for the University of Iowa Foundation’s fundraising program for intercollegiate athletics. The National I-Club will celebrate the occasion with numerous events and activities throughout the year.

“The 75th anniversary of the National I-Club is a wonderful example of the tradition and loyalty exhibited by thousands of Hawkeye fans throughout the years.” said Gary Barta, University of Iowa Director of Athletics. “Without this continued support, our 24 sports and over 600 student-athletes would not have the competitive edge they need to compete successfully in the Big Ten Conference and across the nation.”

The UI Athletics Department is self-sustaining and receives no state funding. Annual contributions to the I-Club help UI Athletics generate over $20 million every year, which is used for scholarship expenses, training facilities, medical treatment, uniforms, travel, and all other expenses associated with being a Hawkeye student-athlete. Annual I-Club membership gifts count toward ticket priority and per-seat football, basketball, and wrestling requirements.

“Our 75th anniversary celebration provides us an opportunity to showcase the many accomplishments and successes the National I-Club has seen throughout the years, highlighting our many facility campaigns, over 10,000 contributors, 24 sports, 50 local I-Club volunteers, and over 600 student-athletes,” said Matt Henderson, Executive Director of Development for Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Iowa Foundation. “We are excited about the upcoming year and the opportunity this major anniversary provides us.”

The National I-Club plans to hold I-Club Day activities at various Hawkeye sporting events throughout the year. Contributors will receive email notifications of these events. The I-Club website, www.jointheiclub.com, will provide additional details on these events, along with further information on the National I-Club’s 75 years of athletic support.
