IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa men’s tennis team found their stride Sunday afternoon at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex as they took down Loyola Marymount, 5-2.
The Hawkeyes started off strong as they used a pair of 8-5 victories to defeat the Lions in doubles action. Garret Dunn and Michael Swank defeated Bustamante and Volmari of Loyola Marymount, (LMU). Shortly after that, Juan Estensorro and Joey White beat Rivera and Simko of LMU, which sealed the lone doubles point. The number two doubles match was abandoned after Iowa gained the doubles point.
“That was a solid win for us against an opponent that is going to beat some good teams this year,” head coach Steve Houghton said. “We continued our really strong doubles play.”
The Hawkeyes fed off their strong start in doubles as they dominated LMU in singles action, winning four out of the six matches. Swank, Estensorro, and Dunn all went 2-0 individually on the day, winning both their singles and doubles matches.
Estensorro made quick work of his singles match, defeating Volmari of LMU in two sets, 6-1, 6-0. “I was particularly please with Juan both in both doubles and singles, “Houghton said. “This was the first weekend he competed for us and he showed us he is going to be a really strong player.”
Swank saw similar success in singles play, defeating Bustamante of LMU, 6-1, 6-4. Dunn improved to 2-0 in singles play on the spring season as he defeated Van Kann of LMU, 6-4, 7-5.
Jonas Dierckx also claimed a victory in singles play as he defeated Kordsachia of LMU, 6-3, 6-2. Matt Hagan and Dominic Patrick fell in their singles matches.
The Hawkeyes return to action Feb. 1 as they host a double header against Bradley and Western Illinois. Action against Bradley will begin at 12:30 p.m. (CT) while the Western Illinois meet will begin at 6:30 p.m. (CT).
