Hawkeyes in 4th Place After Day 1 Competition

Round One Results

CORAL GABLES, Fla. — The University of Iowa women’s golf team is currently tied for fourth place at the Hurricane Invitational, hosted by the University of Miami at Deering Bay Yacht and Country Club. Second round action at the Hurricane Invitational was suspended due to darkness in Coral Gables.

The Hawkeyes carded a first-round team total of 303 (+19) after 18 holes of play. Currently, Iowa is tied for fourth place with a team total of (+28) part way through the second round.

“It was a solid start for us today,” head coach Megan Menzel said. “Shelby and Kristi came out and played very confidently. Everyone was gaining confidence the more holes we played. We are looking forward to a strong finish tomorrow.”

Sophomore Shelby Phillips paced the Hawkeyes in the first round carding a 72 (+1). After bogeying her first hole, Phillips rebounded as she eagled the par-5 ninth hole. Phillips played consistent golf after her eagle on hole No. 9, shooting one over par through the next 14 holes. Phillips was able to get 11 holes of golf in during her second round before play was suspended. Phillips is currently three over par in her second round and is tied for 12th individually.

Senior Kristi Cardwell put together an equally impressive first round of golf as she carded a 73 (+2) for the Hawkeyes. Cardwell played steady golf shooting even par through her first 12 holes of golf. Through 12 holes of golf in her second round, Cardwell is one-under par. Cardwell is tied for seventh place individually.

In her first round of action, sophomore Lauren English fired a 78 (+7) for the Hawkeyes. English shot eight pars to go along with two birdies in her first 18 holes of play. Through 12 holes of golf, English is four-over par in her second round of play. English is currently tied for 34th individually.

Gigi DiGrazia carded an 80 (+9) in her first round of action, collecting 12 pars in the process. Through 15 holes of play, DiGrazia currently is seven over par in her second round of action.

Freshman Briana Midkiff carded an 84 (+13) in her first round of play for the Hawkeyes. Midkiff collected six pars and two birdies through her first 18 holes of play. Through 16 holes of play in her second round, Midkiff is currently eight-over par.

The Hawkeyes also sent freshman Amy Ihm and sophomore Nicole Rae to Coral Gables to compete as individuals. After shooting five-over par through her first nine holes, Ihm rallied on her back nine and shot even par. Through 12 holes of play, Ihm is four-over par in her second round of action and sits tied for 25th individually. Nicole Rae carded an 85 (+14) in her first round of action and is currently fourteen over par in her second round of action through 15 holes.

The remainder of the second round will resume tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. at the Deering Bay Yacht and Country Club, to be followed by the third and final round.
