Feb. 25, 2013

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s cross country program has been named a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team for the 10th straight season. The 2012 Hawkeyes compiled a team cumulative 3.36 GPA and placed sixth at the NCAA Midwest Regional.

The USTFCCCA also announced today that Megan Ranegar and Mareike Schrulle earned individual academic honors. Schrulle, a graduate student from Arnsburg, Germany, earned All-Region honors at the NCAA Midwest Regional, placing third and qualifying for the NCAA Championships, where she eventually placed seventh in the country.

Ranegar, an interdepartmental studies major from Valparaiso, Ind., placed 15th at the Midwest Regional.

“Both Mareike and Megan represent what we as a program aspire to attain, which is excellence in the classroom and on the cross country course,” said head coach Layne Anderson. “Both are amongst the nation’s best distance runners and this award reflects a similar level of commitment to their academics at the University of Iowa.”

To qualify for the USTFCCCA individual all-academic team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have either earned USTFCCCA All-America status or finished in the NCAA region’s top 15 (or top 10 percent) in 2012.

To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the team must have had a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better and have started at least five runners at their respective NCAA regional championship.
