CEDAR CITY, Utah — The 25th-ranked University of Iowa women’s gymnastics team scored 195.025 in the quad meet on Friday, earning second place. Southern Utah won the meet (196.200), while San Jose State finished third (194.250), and Ball State placed fourth (193.575).
Iowa earned the top score on vault (49.050) and bars (49.325), with sophomore Emma Willis winning the vault (9.875), and sophomore Sydney Hoerr winning bars (9.925).
Hoerr and Willis tied for second in the all-around (39.150), while freshman Alie Glover placed sixth (38.850). Southern Utah senior Caitlin Kennedy won the all-around title, scoring a career-high 39.275.
“Vault and bars were the best events we competed,” said head coach Larissa Libby. “We made mistakes, and I anticipated coming down a little bit after a highly emotional meet last weekend. You’re bound to come down at some point, and this was a good time to do it. It wasn’t devastating, and we competed really well. We finished with a season-high on bars, and being able to take it up a notch every event will help us in postseason. The errors we encountered were uncharacteristic. Now we can regroup, refresh, and be ready to go.”
The Hawkeyes started on the beam, totaling 47.850. Glover paced Iowa with 9.750, Trowbridge earned 9.725, Hoerr scored 9.700, and Willis added 9.675. Iowa was forced to count a fall from sophomore Caitlin Tanzer (9.000).
With only five Hawkeye gymnasts performing on the floor, Iowa tallied 48.800. Trowbridge led the way, tying her career-best 9.900 for the fifth time this season. Stevenson scored 9.850, Willis earned 9.800, Hoerr posted 9.675, and Glover added 9.575.
Iowa broke the 49 range on vault, scoring 49.050. Willis led the Hawkeyes with 9.875, while Wickus and Hoerr earned a pair of 9.850s. Freshman Adara Griffin scored 9.750, and Trowbridge contributed 9.700.
Iowa finished the meet with an outstanding performance on bars. The Hawkeyes tallied a season-high 49.325, including four individual season-bests. Hoerr earned a career-high 9.925, winning the event. Stevenson posted a season-best 9.900 for second, Wickus scored a career-best 9.875 for third, and Glover tied her career-high 9.825.
“It was a good environment to compete in before going into Championship season,” said Libby. “The quad meet atmosphere is a little more crazy, but since we have already experienced it, we will be prepared for Big Ten’s.”
The Hawkeyes will return to action next Saturday to compete at the Big Ten Championships in East Lansing, Mich. The competition is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. (CT) in Jenison Field House.
