Gryshayev, Balboa Earn All-America honors

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The University of Iowa men’s gymnastics team had three gymnasts qualify for NCAA Event Finals on Sunday at Rec Hall on the campus of Penn State University. Anton Gryshayev, Javier Balboa, and William Albert competed on the still rings.

Gryshayev led the Hawkeyes with his score of 14.925 to place seventh on the event. Balboa finished close behind, earning eighth place with a 14.875. Albert rounded out the top-10, scoring 13.125. The still rings crown went to Michael Squires of Oklahoma (15.775).

Friday night, the Hawkeyes finished third in the second session of the NCAA National Qualifier. Their score of 426.550 earned them a berth in Saturday’s team finals. Their appearance yesterday was the first time qualifying for the team finals since 2006. Iowa tallied a score of 426.450 to finish fifth, with 10 top-20 finishes. Balboa earned All-America status as he finished sixth in the all-around with his score of 85.650.
