Spring Scrimmage Scoring System

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa football program today announced changes to Saturday’s Spring Scrimmage, presented by Coke Zero, inside Kinnick Stadium. Team activities will look less like a practice and more like a controlled scrimmage that includes four 15-minute quarters.

Each of the quarters will be timed similar to a standard NCAA football game, but there will be some slight play and scoring modifications. There will be no kick or punt returns, and points will be awarded to both offense and defense based on situational performance.

The offense will be awarded points for touchdowns (6), field goals (3), extra points (1), explosive plays (1) and three consecutive first downs (1). An explosive play is defined by a rush of 12-plus yards or a pass of 16-plus yards.

The defense will be awarded points for touchdowns (7), sudden change (4), turnovers (3), sacks (2), PAT block (1), and 3-and-outs (1). A sudden change occurs if the offense starts a series inside the plus-35 and is held to a field goal or less.

The Iowa Football Spring Scrimmage, presented by Coke Zero, begins at 2:05 p.m. (CT). Gates open at 1 p.m.

There is no admission charge. Fans are invited to join forces with the UI Athletics Department, the Iowa Farm Bureau, and the Johnson County Crisis Center in the second annual ANF Food Bank Drive. Fans are invited to bring non-perishable food items to the annual open practice. To encourage donations, the first 5,000 fans who make a donation of canned food items will receive a souvenir ANF “Farm Strong” poster featuring Casey Wiegmann, who last fall was the first former Hawkeye to be named to the ANF Wall of Honor inside ANF Plaza at Kinnick. Collection trucks will be located near the Krause Family Plaza, just south of Kinnick Stadium.
