IOWA CITY, Iowa — The Iowa spirit squads (ISS) concluded tryouts for the 2013-2014 squad on Sunday, April 21. The Iowa cheerleaders, Iowa dance team and Herky’s security members participated in tryouts throughout the weekend.
More than 100 people tried out for spots the ISS from Iowa, Chicago, Omaha, Minneapolis and as far away as California. In the end, 22 cheerleaders and 20 dancers will represent the Hawkeyes on the sidelines when the football team takes on Northern Illinois in the home opener August 31.
The 2013-14 Iowa spirit squads will consist of: Oz Agebese, Alex Andre, Alyssa Bauer, Mike Begovich, Hannah Bray, Leah Brucks, Caitlin Danielson, Pat Davis, Kaitlyn Dornbier, Madeline Gage, Carson Goodale, Alex Hardy, Amy Harris, Emma Hauser, Bryce Hundley, Christy Hunt, Katie Jarrett, Kelsey Jarrett, Lindsey Knott, John Lodewyck, Payton Mass, Kelly McGinnis, Erik Metcalf, Kayla Meyer, Janie Myers, Donte Nesbitt, Alexa Oechsle, Sean Olsen, Jake Park, Javy Perez, Alexis Puebla, Morgan Rabine, Holly Reimer, McKenna Rollinger, Danea Shemansky, Hannah Solchenberger, Callie Sorteberg, Avery Stahr, Lexie Strom, Emily Swanson, Austin Tasler, Kelly Tocki, Alayna Vogel, Nate Volk, Tori Wadman, Dan Waterhouse, Tommy Wisniewski, Abby Zaug.
The Iowa cheerleaders and Iowa dance team can be seen at all home football, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball games and wrestling meets. All three groups also participate at UCA/UDA Nationals and regional competitions. ISS members participate in public relations events throughout the year, as well as hosting clinics and a fall competition.
Team members will return over the summer for weekend practices and UCA/UDA College Camp at the start of August. Camp will take place in Wisconsin Dells, Wis.
The teams are coached by Gregg Niemiec (spirit coordinator/head cheerleading coach), Jenny Eustice (head dance team coach), Brandon Clemens (head mascot coach), Marcus Walker (assistant cheerleading coach), Charles Kramer (assistant cheerleading coach), Jenny Niemiec (assistant cheerleading coach) and Ashley Wahlert (assistant dance team coach).
