IOWA CITY, Iowa — April 27 brought a lot of Hawkeye action around Iowa City and Herky was there… actually, Herky was everywhere.
Herky’s day started at Carver-Hawkeye Arena and the Iowa Foundation’s Contributors Luncheon. Hundreds of UI contributors were invited for a tailgating experience, food, fight songs and speakers on the concourse at Carver. The Iowa cheerleaders and Iowa dance team also performed at the event.
Iowa baseball and Iowa softball were Herky’s next two stops. Entertaining the crowds, signing autographs, playing with kids and taking lots of pictures. The crowds at both were great with the sunny, warm weather.
Next it was off to Kinnick Stadium for the Iowa football team’s Spring Scrimmage, presented by Coke Zero. Around 16,000 Hawkeye fans came to see a preview of this year’s squad. While the team was busy on the field, Herky was seen all around Kinnick, taking pictures with fans, dancing on Hawk Vision, signing autographs and filming a video for the admissions department.
Herky next took a quick flight over the Iowa River to RiverFest in Hubbard Park for an annual event that celebrates spring around campus. The bouncy houses were a favorite of the kids and Herky alike. Although a few younger kids did not know how to react to a seven-foot tall bird, soon Herky had them convinced he was a great bird, and they gave him high-fives.
Following RiverFest, Herky made a stop by Subway on the Coralville strip to help promote the store.
The last stop of the day was the Make-A-Wish auction held at Bella Sala in Tiffin. This event raised funds for hundreds of Make-A-Wish kids around the state. Herky helped promote auction items as he mingled through the crowds dressed in evening gowns and suits. It was a great fundraiser for a great organization.
It was a long, memorable day for Herky, but in the end, it was well worth it as he made the day for thousands of Hawkeye fans.
