Nationally Ranked Hawkeyes Set for B1G Championships

THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa track and field team heads to Columbus, Ohio, for the Big Ten Outdoor Championships on May 10-12. The event will be held at the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium and is scheduled to begin Friday at 11 a.m. (CT).

IN THE RANKINGS
The Hawkeye men’s team is currently ranked No. 18 in the USTFCCCA Top 25 Division I National Team Computer Rankings. The men are also ranked sixth in the regional rankings, while the women are ranked 13th.

A SHOT AT HISTORY
Matt Byers looks to become the first athlete in school history to win four consecutive Big Ten titles in the same event. The senior is a three-time Big Ten javelin champion. His season-best toss of 234-8 (71.54m) currently ranks second in the Big Ten and 13th nationally. Byers also holds the school record (245-8; 74.89m) in the event.

TUTSON TAKES RELAYS FLAG
Senior Majesty Tutson recorded a school record-setting throw en route to a Drake Relays championship on April 26. Tutson recorded a toss of 181-1 (55.19m) besting her previous school record mark of 177-1 (54.21m). Her mark currently ranks second in the Big Ten and seventh in the nation.

AUSTIN MAINTAINS TOP SPOT
Senior Justin Austin has held the top 100 (10.22) and 200 (20.55) meter times in the Big Ten for four straight weeks. His 200 meters time ranks sixth in the nation, while his 100 meters mark ranks 13th. Austin currently holds the school record in both events (10.21; 20.31). Senior Josh Larney currently holds the third best 100 meters time (10.46) in the Big Ten.

KWAZA CLOCKS PERSONAL BEST
Lake Kwaza sprinted to a second-place finish at the Drake Relays on April 27. The freshman clocked a personal-best time of 11.60. That time ties for fifth all-time at Iowa. Her time currently ranks fifth in the Big Ten.

HOLMES GOES FOR GOLD
Senior Ethan Holmes has been the Big Ten 110-meter hurdles runner-up the past two seasons. Holmes clocked a time of 13.74 at the 2012 championships and recorded his personal-best time of 13.73 at the 2011 Big Ten Championships. His time ranks fourth all-time at Iowa. Holmes will be challenged by teammate Jordan Mullen. The senior holds a personal-best time of 13.77 that ranks fifth all-time at Iowa. The duo’s season-best time of 13.77 currently ranks second in the Big Ten and 17th in the nation.

WILLIAMS LOOKS TO IMPROVE
Sophomore Khanishah Williams looks to improve upon her 11th-place finish in the high jump at the 2012 Big Ten Championships. Williams recorded a leap of 5-7 1/4 (1.71m). She has bested that mark twice this season. Her personal-best jump of 5-11 1/4 (1.81m) currently ranks second in the Big Ten and 22nd in the nation. Her mark also ranks third all-time at Iowa.

HAWKEYES IN THE 400 HURDLES
Seniors Ethan Holmes and Keaton Rickels both hold top 10 400-meter hurdle times. Holmes’ season best time of 50.67 currently ranks second in the Big Ten (eighth nationally), while Rickels’ time of 51.60 ranks sixth. Holmes’ personal best time of 50.65 ranks sixth all-time at Iowa.

HAWKEYES IN THE HAMMER
Three Hawkeyes are currently ranked among the top 10 in the Big Ten hammer throw. Jasmine Simpson, the school record holder in the event, holds the third best mark in the conference 197-7 (61.23m), while sophomore Annemie Smith (188-4; 57.41m) and junior Ashlyn Gulvas (188-0; 57.30m) rank seventh and eighth, respectively.

DELAUNAY AMONG TOP THREE
Klyvens Delaunay holds the third best triple jump mark in the Big Ten. The freshman’s personal-best leap of 50-6 /4 (15.40m) also ranks 42nd nationally, and currently ranks fourth all-time at Iowa.

HULL CLIMBS DISCUS RANKINGS
Sophomore Gabe Hull earned a fifth-place finish at the 2012 Big Ten Championships with a toss of 187-1 (57.03m). Hull has bested that mark four times this season. His personal best mark of 196-2 (59.80m) currently ranks third in the Big Ten and ninth in the nation. It also ranks third all-time at Iowa.

MEET THE RECORD HOLDERS
Five Hawkeyes on the 2013 roster account for six individual school records. They include:
Justin Austin — 100 meters (10.21); 200 meters (20.31)
Matt Byers — javelin (245-8; 74.89m)
Majesty Tutson — discus (177-10; 54.21m)
Jasmine Simpson — hammer throw (197-7; 60.23m)
Kyle Reid — decathlon (7,025 points)
The Hawkeyes 4X1 men’s team also holds the school record (39.35).
