NCAA Championships Notes

THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa track and field team travels to Eugene, Ore., to compete at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on June 5-8. Eight Hawkeyes advanced to the NCAA final site to compete in the championship field of 24. The championships are hosted by Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.

HAWKEYES STACK UP WELL AGAINST REST OF COUNTRY
The Iowa men qualified for the NCAA final site in nine events, tied for the eighth most in the country. The Hawkeyes have five qualifiers in sprints/hurdles, two in throws, and one each in jumps and relays. Iowa’s nine qualifiers ties Nebraska and Ohio State for the most in the Big Ten.

HAWKEYE MEN BACK IN THE POLLS AT NO. 20
The Iowa men are back in the USTFCCCA top 25 after a one week hiatus. The Hawkeyes debuted in the poll on April 23 at No. 12, the highest ranking in program history. Iowa slid out of the poll after a fifth place finish at the conference championships, but are back at No. 20 in the May 28 poll. The Hawkeyes are one of five Big Ten teams rated among the top 25, only the SEC has more schools (8) ranked among the nation’s best. Iowa’s weekly jump from No. 30 to No. 20 was tied with Oklahoma State (17) for the biggest jump in the country.

PAST CHAMPIONS
Thirteen Hawkeye student-athletes have combined for 14 NCAA titles since Eric Wilson won the 220 meters in 1921 and 1923. Tracy Dahl and Ed Gordon also won multiple NCAA titles — Dahl in the 5K (1992-93) and Gordon in the long jump (1929-31). The women’s last NCAA champion was Kineke Alexander (2006, 400m). The men’s most recent title came from Bashir Yamini (1998, long jump). Erik Sowinski earned a runner-up finish in the 800 meters in 2012.

Justin Austin — 100 METERS, 200 METERS, 4X1 RELAY
Senior Justin Austin advanced to the NCAA final site for the third straight season in the 200 meters. He’s making his first NCAA Championships appearance in the 100 meters, and will run the second leg of Iowa’s 4×1 relay. He owns the school record in all three events — 100 (10.21), 200 (20.31) and 4×1 (39.35). He also earned a gold medal in all three events at the 2013 Big Ten Championships, where he was named Athlete of the Year and Athlete of the Championships. Austin’s best NCAA Championships finish was 13th in the 200 meters in 2012.

Matt Byers — JAVELIN
A four-time NCAA qualifier, senior Matt Byers placed seventh (234-01) in the West Regional to advance to the NCAA Championships’ final site for the third time in his career (he placed 21st at the NCAA Championships in 2010 and 10th in 2012). He won the javelin conference title from 2010-12 and placed runner-up in 2013. He holds the school record with a mark of 245-8 (74.89m).

Klyvens Delaunay — TRIPLE JUMP
Freshman Klyvens Delaunay placed ninth at the West Region and enters the final site as the No. 10 seed following his personal best mark of 51-10 1/2 (15.81m) in Austin, Texas. Delaunay’s PR ranks No. 3 in school history.

Ethan Holmes — 400-METER HURDLES, 4X1 RELAY
Senior Ethan Holmes advanced to the NCAA final site in 400-meter hurdles for the third straight year. He also runs the third leg on Iowa’s 400-meter relay. Holmes placed 12th in the 400-meter hurdles with a personal best 50.51 in Austin, Texas, a mark that ranks sixth in school history. The 4×1 team holds the school record (39.35) and enters the final site as the No. 13 seed with a qualifying time of 39.79.

Gabe Hull — DISCUS
Sophomore Gabe Hull is making his first career appearance at the NCAA Championships’ final site after placing third (191-10; 58.47m) in the discus. His qualifying mark ranks No. 6 at the final site. Hull set a personal-best mark of 196-2 (59.80m) earlier this season, a mark that ranks No. 3 in school history. He also earned second runner-up in discus at the 2013 conference championships.

Josh Larney — 100 METERS, 4X1 RELAY
Senior Josh Larney is making his first career appearance at the Division I NCAA final site. He was a three-time NJCAA All-American while competing at Iowa Central in 2011. He qualified as the No. 21 seed in the 100 meters with a mark of 10.59 at the West Regional. He also ran the anchor leg of Iowa’s school record 4×1 relay (39.35). Larney’s 10.31 personal-best, set at the NCAA West Regional prelims, ranks No. 3 all-time in school history.

Jordan Mullen — 110-METER HURDLES, 4X1 RELAY
Senior Jordan Mullen is making his first career appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships final site. He was an All-American at the 2011 and 2013 Indoor Championships, placing ninth in the 60-meter hurdles both years. Mullen placed 10th at the West Regional to grab the first at-large berth with a time of 13.81. He set a personal record in the event and placed second at the Big Ten Championships with a time of 13.76. He also runs the lead leg of Iowa’s 400-meter relay.

Majesty Tutson — DISCUS
Senior Majesty Tutson is a four-time NCAA qualifier in the discus, but she’s making her first appearance at the NCAA final site following a sixth place finish (175-00 (53.33m) at the West Regional. Tutson was the Big Ten runner-up in the discus at the 2013 conference championships, and she broke her own school record with a toss of 181-1 (55.19m) at the 2013 Drake Relays.
