EUGENE, Ore. — The University of Iowa scored seven team points and crowned five first team All-Americans on the final day of the 2013 NCAA Track & Field Championships.
Senior Justin Austin placed sixth in a pair of events, finishing in 20.45 in the 200 meters and running the second leg of Iowa’s 400-meter relay. Tevin-Cee Mincy, Austin, Ethan Holmes, and Josh Larney combined to circle the oval in 39.77 to earn first team All-America honors.
Freshman Klyvens Delaunay grabbed first team All-America honors with a personal record in the triple jump. Delaunay entered the event as the No. 10 seed, but he jumped 52-2 1/2 (15.91m) on his third attempt to finish eighth overall. Delaunay jumped from No. 3 to No. 2 on Iowa’s all-time top performers list. He trails only Troy Doris, who earned first team All-America honors from 2011-12.
Senior Matt Byers earned second team All-America honors for the second straight year following a 14th place finish in the javelin. Byers recorded a mark of 222-11 (67.96) on his third attempt, finishing his Hawkeye career with his third All-America honor.
“We closed out an outstanding year, season, NCAA Championships, and ultimately final day, with superb performances,” said head coach Layne Anderson. “We watched the proverbial baton being passed from our veterans — Justin, Josh, Matt, Ethan, and Jordan (Mullen) — to the future in Klyvens. We owe a lot of thanks to those seniors who completed their historic careers.”
