Hawkeyesports.com recently caught up with defensive back Jordan Lomax at 2013 Football Media Day.

After missing the 2012 season, what does it feel like to be back on the field with your teammates?
“It’s a great feeling just to be out here with my brothers. We all go to work throughout the winter and summer. The lifting and running program is strenuous on the body, and on game days you’re out there with the same group of people that you worked with throughout the winter. We’re all out here working on getting better.”

What is it like working with Coach Phil Parker again?
“I love Coach Parker. He’s a great teacher. He really slows down the game for you and forces you to use more of your mental than physical attributes. It helps us during film study to break down the game faster and allows us to react on the field faster.”

There is some depth at the defensive back position. How do you feel about the group overall?
“I feel like we have a great group of guys. We’re all working hard. We have Sean Draper, Nico Law, Ruben Lile, John Lowdermilk, B.J. Lowery, Tanner Miller, and Maurice Fleming. We also have a few incoming freshmen: Desmond King, Malik Rucker and Kevin Ward. Those guys will just fall into the right place as they’re coming along. It’s also our job to help them along as well. I feel like we’re all working hard.”

In your third year with the Hawkeyes, how do you try and help the younger defensive backs?
“Right now, I’m rooming with Malik Rucker, and it’s basically my job to teach them what we go through as a defense during practice. At night, before we turn the lights off, the two of us might spend about 30-40 minutes going over what we learned today, just so he knows what to do before we get on the field.”

What facet of your game has improved the most since spring ball?
“Recognizing formations. Coach Parker wants me to recognize the formation and predetermine what the offense might run and that all starts with film study.”

What led you to Iowa City and the Hawkeye football program during the recruiting process?
“It was Big Ten football, obviously, plus the education. The coaches made it feel like a winning environment, and I felt like if I wanted to win, this is where I should be. The coaches really care and they take their time with us. The program has a family environment.”

What are your individual goals for the upcoming season?
“I really don’t have any individual goals. It’s all just team goals. Our goal is to win that Big Ten championship and as long as we do that, I’m happy. My individual goals really don’t matter.”

Is there any significance to the No. 27 jersey you wear?
“Yes, there is. My grandparents use to live in West Baltimore and their address was 2727 Parkwood Avenue. They both have passed away, so the number 27 is in memory of them.”

How hungry is the team for the start of the 2013 season?
“We’re definitely hungry. We’re out here every day as a team just trying to force each other to play as fast and strong as we can towards the common team goal to win a championship in the end. I feel like we’re all coming together as a team and we love that feeling right now.”

Describe the feeling you get when you run out of the tunnel at Kinnick Stadium in front of 70,000 screaming Hawkeye fans.
“It’s a great feeling. The adrenaline is rushing through your body and you hear all of the screaming fans and the cheers. Once you hear that whistle blow, you just want to go hit somebody.”
