IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa volleyball team opened the 2013 season with its annual Black and Gold Scrimmage on Mediacom Court in Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Saturday, Aug. 24.

The Black and Gold teams played a total of four sets, three to 25 points and one to 15. The Gold team recorded victories in each set but by a close margin. Head volleyball coach Sharon Dingman was excited about what she saw on the court.

“I was pleased,” Dingman said. “I was especially pleased after the intermission because we challenged (each other) to take bigger swings and have a little bit more wrist when they take swings. And I thought they did, so it was really fun to see them make that adjustment.”

“I thought our defense was really solid. We served and passed well. It’s hard when you’re going against each other… but generally speaking, I was really pleased with what I saw tonight.”

A pair of Hawkeyes reached double digits in kills, including senior Rachael Bedell who tallied 15 with a .393 hitting percentage and junior Alessandra Dietz who recorded 12 posting a .478 hitting percentage. Sophomore Anne Yanda paced the squad in assists with 35 followed by freshman Alyssa Klostermann with 20 and senior Nikki Dailey with 18. Senior Bethany Yeager and junior Kari Mueller led the way in digs recording 21 apiece, while sophomore Julianne Blomberg and Klostermann also reached double digits in digs with 14 and 10, respectively. Junior Erin Leppek and freshman Lauren Brobst each compiled four blocks in the competition.

Iowa opens the 2013 regular season Aug. 30-31 at the Chanticleer Invitational in Conway, S.C. The Hawkeyes will face Wofford, Youngstown State and tournament host Coastal Carolina.
