Hawkeyes Set to Host Black & Gold Invite

THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa men’s and women’s cross country teams host the Black & Gold Invitational on Friday. Action at the Ashton Cross Country Course begins at 6:00 p.m.(CT). with the women’s 4K. The men’s 6K event will follow.

IN THE RANKINGS
Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams are ranked in the latest USTFCCCA Regional rankings. The women’s team is ranked 10th in the Midwest Region, while the men are ranked 11th.

2013 BLACK & GOLD INVITE
The 2013 Black & Gold Invite features teams from Alabama, Baylor (women), and Iowa State. The Alabama men’s team received seven votes in the latest USTFCCCA national poll, while the Iowa State women’s team is currently ranked 26th.

COMPETING FOR THE HAWKEYES
The entire men’s roster is slated to compete on Friday. The Hawkeye women will be represented by Katie Adams, Lisa Gordon, Grace Haerr, Courtney Martin, Shannon Maser, Gina O’Brien, Lena Placzek, Rachel Price, Jocelyn Todd, Tess Wilberding, and Samantha Zishka. Freshman Alana Jones and sophomore Carolyn Newhouse are scheduled to compete unattached.

DOCHERTY SHINES IN DEBUT
Freshman Kevin Docherty took the title at the Hawkeye Early Bird Invitational on Aug. 30. Docherty crossed the 4,000-meter finish line in 12:34. He is the first Hawkeye to win a debut race since Jeff Thode in 2009.

PLACZEK LEADS THE PACK
Lena Placzek was the top finisher for the Hawkeye women at the Early Bird Invitational on Aug. 30. The senior clocked a 3,000-meter time of 11:07 to finish second overall. The second place finish matches Placzek highest career finish. She also recorded a second-place finish at the 2012 Western Illinois Early Bird Open.

IMMEDIATE IMPACT
Four freshmen recorded scoring times in their Hawkeye debuts. Tess Wilberding (11:08.26) recorded a second-place finish in the 3K, and Samantha Zishka (11:08.50) placed fifth for the Hawkeye women. Kevin Docherty (12:34) took the title in the men’s 4K event, and Ben Anderson (12:45) placed fourth.

TOP 10 ALL-TIME
Junior Kevin Lewis currently holds the eighth best 6,000 meters time in school history. Lewis clocked a time of 18:35 at the 2012 Western Illinois Early Bird Open. Lisa Gordon owns the 10th best women’s 4,000 meters time in school history. The sophomore clocked the time of 14:17 at the 2012 Toledo Bubble Buster.
