Hawkeyes Travel to Pre-National Invite

THIS WEEK
The University of Iowa men’s and women’s cross country team’s travel to Terre Haute, Ind., to compete at the Pre-National on Saturday. The event is held at the LaVern Gibson Course Championship Cross Country Course on the campus of Indiana State University. The men’s 8,000-meter race begins at 10 a.m. (CT) with the women’s 6,000-meter race following at 10:40 a.m. (CT).

IN THE RANKINGS
The men’s cross country team is ranked 11th in the latest USTFCCCA Regional rankings.

NATIONAL CHALLENGE
The Hawkeye women will face 13 teams ranked inside the Top 30, including Big Ten foes Michigan (14) and Penn State (27). The Hawkeye men will race against nine of the nation’s top 30 teams, three of which are ranked in the top five. They include Oklahoma State (1), Colorado (2), and Oregon (4).

PRE-NATIONAL EXPERIENCE
Five Hawkeyes have Pre-National experience. Senior Jon Michael Brandt, juniors Kevin Lewis and Ben Witt, and sophomores Anthony Gregorio and Caleb Wilfong each competed at the 2012 Pre-National Invitational.

MAKING AN IMPACT
Underclassmen have paced the Hawkeye women in the last two meets. Freshman Samantha Zishka (14:34) was the top finisher for the women at the 4K Black & Gold Invitational on Sept. 13, while sophomore Courtney Martin (22:40.7) lead the Hawkeyes at the 6K Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 28.

LEWIS MAKING STRIDES
Kevin Lewis has clocked personal best times in each of his last two competitions. The junior led the Hawkeyes to the Black and Gold Invitational Title on Sept. 13. Lewis took the men’s individual title when he clocked a 6,000-meter time of 18:33. That time ties for sixth all-time at Iowa. Lewis paced the Hawkeye men at the Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 28. He crossed the 8,000-meter finish line in 24:59.5.

UP NEXT
The Hawkeyes travel to West Lafayette, Ind., for the Big Ten Championships on Nov. 3.
