IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa football team doesn’t play a home football game the Saturday immediately prior to this year’s Veteran’s Day, Monday, Nov. 11. However, that doesn’t mean the Hawkeyes won’t be saluting those Americans who have served or are serving their country at historic Kinnick Stadium during the 2013 college football season.
The UI Athletics Department will distribute red, white, and blue pom pons for the 70,000 fans in attendance Saturday to wave in enthusiastic support of the Hawkeyes when they enter Kinnick Stadium for the 2013 Heartland Trophy game against Wisconsin, and again during the playing of the National Anthem by the Hawkeye Marching Band in honor of our nation’s Veterans and military personnel currently serving at home and abroad.

“Saturday is `Blackout Saturday’ for fans of the Hawkeyes. It’s also the Heartland Trophy game and a renewal of one of the most competitive rivalries in college football. Adding this splash of red, white, and blue as a reminder of the celebrations that will occur next weekend all across our country will add to the energy and excitement of what promises to be a great afternoon in one of college football’s most outstanding venues.”

“The fact that we don’t play a home football game the Saturday prior to our country’s annual Veterans Day should not be reason to not show our appreciation for those who have served our country and those who are currently serving our country,” said Rick Klatt, the UI’s associate athletics director for external relations.
“Saturday is `Blackout Saturday’ for fans of the Hawkeyes. It’s also the Heartland Trophy game and a renewal of one of the most competitive rivalries in college football. Adding this splash of red, white, and blue as a reminder of the celebrations that will occur next weekend all across our country will add to the energy and excitement of what promises to be a great afternoon in one of college football’s most outstanding venues,” added Klatt.
Fans of the Hawkeyes are encouraged to begin making their way to their seats inside Kinnick Stadium an hour or so before kickoff.
“This game is approaching sellout status, so it will take a little more time for fans to work their way from the pre-game location, through the gates at the stadium, and into their seats. Our suggestion would be to plan to arrive at your seat by about 10:30 and enjoy all of the pre-game activities, including the performance of the Hawkeye Marching Band, our Veterans Day tribute, and the introductions of our Kid Captain and Honorary Captain, ” said Klatt.
