IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa volleyball fell to No. 10 Nebraska in straight sets on Mediacom Court in Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Wednesday night. The Hawkeyes are now 11-20 overall and 2-17 in Big Ten play. Nebraska moves to 23-5 overall and 16-3 in conference action with the win.
The Hawkeyes kept set one close early and used a four-point drive to tie the score 8-8 with a Rachael Bedell kill, an Alessandra Dietz solo block, a Dietz and Bedell combination block, and a Dietz kill. Nebraska fired back with a 3-0 run to pull ahead and continued to add to its lead, winning the opening set 25-17.
Bedell led the way for Iowa offensively with five kills in the set and posted an .833 hitting percentage, while Erin Radke added a pair of kills with a .250 hitting percentage. Nebraska out-hit Iowa .138 to .065 in the stretch.
After falling behind 3-0 in the second set, Iowa responded with a four-point rally fueled by Bedell and Radke to take a lead. Nebraska came back to tie the set three times, but the Hawkeyes used a Bedell kill and a pair of Lovell kills to stay ahead 9-6. Iowa used a strong offensive presence from Bedell to stay up 14-11.
The Cornhuskers used a four-point run to recover and establish a one point lead. The Hawkeyes came back to tie it twice, but Nebraska outscored Iowa 9-3 to close out the second set, 25-18. Bedell paced the Hawkeye offense notching five kills once again, while Lovell added four kills. The Cornhuskers posted a .321 set hitting percentage, while the Hawkeyes hit .250.
The third set included four early ties before Nebraska used a 5-0 run to seize the momentum and pull ahead 9-4. The Cornhuskers led from that point on, recording a 25-18 final set win to secure a 3-0 match victory.
Radke posted a team-best and season-high .467 hitting percentage with nine kills, while Bedell recorded a team-most 10 kills.
“I think Erin Radke was really good tonight in every phase,” head coach Sharon Dingman said. “She wasn’t just attacking, she made some coverage plays and she was passing. She never passes, and she stepped back there like it was nothing new for her.
“Right now, Erin and Rachael Bedell are playing with a lot of confidence. It’s fun to watch. I’m so thrilled for Rachael because the end of her career is so close now. The way she’s played over the last month has been really fun. Every coach wants a senior to go out like Rachael is going out right now.”
Nikki Dailey dished out a team-most 14 assists, Bethany Yeager posted a team-high eight kills, and Dietz led the blocking front with three stuffs.
The Hawkeyes conclude their 2013 season with a Saturday, Nov. 30 match against Ohio State on Mediacom Court in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. It will serve as Senior Night for Bedell, Grace Burns, Nikki Dailey, and Bethany Yeager. The first 500 fans will receive a Herky Volleyball Bobblehead, and the Hawkeyes will sign autographs after the match and senior presentation.
