THIS WEEK
The No. 25 University of Iowa men’s swimming and diving team returns home for its final meet before Big Ten Championships, hosting Western Illinois in the annual Senior Meet on Feb. 7. The senior recognition will begin around 5:45 p.m. (CT), with competition slated for 6 p.m.

HAWKEYES DROP 2 DUALS AT SHAMROCK INVITE
Iowa dropped a pair of dual meets at the Shamrock Invitational, falling to Notre Dame (224.5-145.5) and Missouri State (213-157). Sophomore paced the Hawkeyes, claiming two individual titles, while winning a relay title as well. Trussov, paired with , , and to claim the 200-medley relay, finishing in 1:29.78. Trussov went on to win the 100-breast (55.05) and 200-breast (2:00.26) events, with Trussov’s 100-breast time reaching an NCAA `B’ cut. Rhoads posted a pair of second-place finishes, including a `B’ cut time, in both backstroke events.

SCOUTING THE MEET
Western Illinois Leathernecks dropped its last meet, falling to Saint Louis, 141-69. Matt Abercrombie recorded a pair of second-place finishes in the 1,000-free and 200-back, while Chris Neaveill and JD Furr touched out 2-3 in 200-IM.

HAWKEYES IN THE RANKINGS
The Hawkeyes are ranked 25th in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) poll, released Jan. 21. The Hawkeyes are 1-of-7 Big Ten programs ranked in the top 25 along with Michigan (1), Indiana (8), Ohio State (9), Minnesota (14), Purdue (17), and Penn State (23). Iowa is also ranked 30th in the collegeswimming.com poll based off its results at the Shamrock Invitational.

NCAA `B’ CUTS
The Hawkeyes have posted 15 NCAA `B’ cuts, three Zone Diving standards, and one NCAA provisional time on the season. , , , , , and have all posted two NCAA `B’ cut times, while , , and Chris Freeman have posted one `B’ cut time. has three Zone Diving standards, and the team of Betulius, Marciniak, Rhoads, and Ernstsson posted a provisional qualifying time in the 400-medley relay.

IOWA NAMED USA DIVING “CENTER OF EXCELLENCE”
UI diving coach Todd Waikel and the Hawkeye diving program have been selected as a USA Diving “Center of Excellence” for 2014. Iowa received the distinction based on its outstanding results and continual production of world-class athletes (Deidre Freeman).

HAWKEYES TO HOST NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The University of Iowa has been selected as the host site for the 2015 Men’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. This marks the second time that NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships will be held in Iowa City. The UI hosted the 1927 NCAA Championships at the UI Field House. The announcement also means that the University of Iowa will host the 2015 Big Ten Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships.

BOSCHULT EARNS BIG TEN DIVER OF THE WEEK
Sophomore was named Big Ten Diver of the Week on Dec. 10. Boschult earned the accolade after claiming the top spot in the platform competition at the Hawkeye Invitational. Boschult’s final score of 373.85 is an Iowa record, and an NCAA Zone Diving standard. Boschult also placed sixth in the 3-meter springboard, and eighth in the 1-meter competition. On the year, Boschult has earned NCAA Zone Diving standards in both springboard events, as well as the platform.

TRUSSOV EARNS B1G SWIMMER OF THE WEEK HONORS
Sophomore was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week on Nov. 5. The Kazakhstan native swam four events against the Gophers, winning two individual events, while placing second and third in a pair of relays. The Swimmer of the Week honor is the first of Trussov’s career and Iowa’s first honoree since 2011. Last season he was selected as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Nov. 6.

HAWKEYES SET WORLD RECORD
Iowa swam to a World Record in the 200 short course meters mixed-medley relay at the Michigan Water Carnival. In the second-to-last event, the Hawkeyes swam to a World Record time when seniors and , junior and sophomore finished with a time of 1:47.61. Iowa also bested a previous World Record time in the mixed 200-meter freestyle relay when sophomore , senior , freshman and sophomore posted a time of 1:40.26. Michigan took down the old record, finishing in 1:36.78.

ZITO EARNS B1G FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK HONORS
Freshman was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Oct.1. Competing in his first collegiate dual at defending national champion Michigan, Zito swam four events for the Hawkeyes, placing second twice, third, and seventh. In the 200-yard breaststroke, the Lombard, Ill., native placed second (2:02.10), behind fellow teammate and NCAA qualifier . In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Zito swam the anchor leg, touching out in 3:03.27. He also placed third in the 200-yard IM in 1:54.56, and placing seventh in the 200-yard freestyle.

RETURNING ALL-AMERICANS
The men’s squad returns junior and senior who earned All-America recognition last season. Betulius earned honorable mention All-America honors in the 100 back as well as being a part of the 200 and 400 medley relays. Marciniak was also a member of both medley relays. Iowa also returns NCAA qualifers and . Ernstsson swam in the 800-free relay, while Trussov finished 24th in the 200-breaststroke.

RECORD BREAKING YEAR
The Hawkeyes are coming off a 2012-13 season where nine records were broken. Individually, (100 back – 46.33), Byron Butler (200 back – 1:43.59, 100 fly – 47.05), (100 breast – 53.59), (200 breast – 1:55.84), and (200 IM – 1:46.15) all captured school records. Jordan Huff, , and Betulius broke the record in the 800 free relay (6:26.79). In the 200 medley relay, the record was broken by Betulius, , Butler and Huff (1:25.82). The quartet of Betulius, Marciniak, Butler and Huff broke the record in the 400 Medley Relay (3:09.66).

ACADEMIC HONORS
One member from the 2012-13 men’s team was named to the Scholar All-America First Team while two other members were named honorable mention. Byron Butler was named to the first team after being an honorable mention selection in 2011-12. Joining Butler were teammates and . For Belzer, it is his second consecutive year earning honorable mention recognition, while Rhoads earned the distinction for the first time. The team was recognized as a CSCAA All-America Team for the third time in program history.

HEAD COACH MARC LONG
Marc Long is in his 10th season as head coach for the University of Iowa swimming team. It’s his eighth as head coach of the combined program. During his tenure as head coach of both programs, 75 school records have fallen and 112 Hawkeyes have provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships.

CAMPUS RECREATION AND WELLNESS CENTER
Ground was broken for the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in October 2007. The facility opened in August 2010 and is home for the Hawkeyes. It is located at the corner of Burlington and Madison streets and cost approximately $69 million. The facility includes a 50-meter competition pool, a separate diving well, a leisure pool with lap lanes and 24,000 square feet of fitness space.

IOWA SWIMMING AND DIVING TRADITION
Iowa was one of the first schools in the nation to compete on a collegiate level and competed at the first NCAA Championship. From 1937 to 1960, Iowa placed in the NCAA top 10 18 times, crowning nine NCAA and 22 Big Ten champions.

NEXT EVENT
The 2014 Big Ten Championships will take place Feb. 26 through March 1 in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Iowa Senior Championships will also be taking place Feb. 27 – March 1 in Iowa City.
