IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s gymnastics team posted a season best on Friday night inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena in its annual Pink Meet, falling to No. 20 Ohio State, 195.275-195.075. Iowa’s previous season high came last week at Illinois (195.025).
“They worked super hard all week, rededicated themselves to making this work for us and there’s the result,” said head coach Larissa Libby. “I’m very pleased. They’re disappointed because it was right there and they’ve got to figure out how to take that next step.”
Iowa started strong on vault with freshman Jordyn Doherty pacing the GymHawks with a season-best 9.850. The Hawkeyes posted their season-best team score on vault with a 48.925, topping their previous best of 48.850 at Michigan State. The Buckeyes were not far behind, finishing bars with a team total of 48.875.
The GymHawks posted a season best 48.900 on bars during the second rotation. Freshman Mollie Drenth, sophomore Alie Glover, and freshman Angel Metcalf all set new season bests, tallying 9.825, 9.750, and 9.850 respectively. Sophomore Maryah Huntley competed on bars for the first time in her career, posting a 9.600.
Ohio State posted a 48.875 on bars, and Iowa led at the midway point, 97.825-97.800. Ohio State took the lead after the third rotation tallying a 48.825 on floor, adding to its team score of 146.625. On beam, Iowa posted a 48.150 with Metcalf leading the Hawkeyes scoring a 9.825.
Iowa’s team score stood at 145.975 entering the final rotation. Iowa finished the night in solid fashion posting its best floor score of the season with a 49.100. The Hawkeyes were led by Huntley, who posted a 9.850. The GymHawks claimed six of the top seven spots on the floor.
The Buckeyes posted a 48.650 on the beam to hang on and defeat Iowa 195.275-195.075. Metcalf won the all-around title with a season best score of 39.325. Glover and junior Sydney Hoerr also competed for the all-around, posting 38.975 and 38.825 respectively. Glover finished fourth, while Hoerr finished fifth.
“There is no better feeling than bringing your team back into Carver-Hawkeye Arena,” Libby said. “They’re hungry right now. You can see it in their eyes, and you can feel it in their soul. They know what they did wrong and they are going to fix it and there’s no better feeling than looking at them and knowing they are going to make this change.”
Iowa will make its last home appearance against the University of Illinois-Chicago on Sunday, Feb. 23. The meet is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. (CT) inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
