Iowa in 3rd Place After Day 2 of Thunderbird

TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Iowa men’s golf team holds sole possession of third place after the second round of the Arizona State University Thunderbird Invitational on Saturday. The tournament is being played at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz.

The Hawkeyes improved their team score by one stroke from day one, posting a 277 (-7) in the second round. Iowa trails in-state rival Iowa State by two strokes and tournament host and leader Arizona State by 12 strokes.

Senior Steven Ihm improved his standing by 18 spots on Saturday, moving from a tie for 22nd to a tie for fourth. Ihm carded a second round score of 66 (-5), the fourth best day two score among all participants. His current score of 137 (-5) leaves him 11 strokes behind tournament leader Jon Rahm of Arizona State.

Junior Brian Bullington holds a tie for eighth place individually after posting a 70 (-1) in the second round. Bullington birdied five holes on day two, tied for the most on the Iowa squad.

Junior Ian Vandersee made a major move in the standings on Saturday, propelling himself from 44th to a tie for 24th. Vandersee’s second round score of 69 (-2) was second to only Ihm’s on Saturday.

Freshman Raymond Knoll was the mark of consistency on Saturday, carding a second round score of 72 (+1) with 17 pars in 18 holes. Knoll currently resides in a tie for 33rd.

Sophomore Voramate Aussarassakorn posted a 76 (+5) in the second round, moving into a tie for 35th.

“We played steady and showed our depth today with different players posting low scores. Steven (Ihm) really propelled the team score,” said head coach Mark Hankins. “We are going back to square one tomorrow, staying in the present and continuing to be confident in our game plan.”

The Hawkeyes begin final round play at Karsten Golf Course on Sunday from 11:00 to 11:36 a.m. (CT).
