Four Gymnasts Represent Iowa at Big Ten Individual Event Finals

LINCOLN, Neb. — The No. 7 University of Iowa men’s gymnastics team had four athletes — redshirt senior Matt McGrath, junior Mitchell Landau, and sophomores Matt Loochtan and Doug Sullivan — compete in the individual event finals of the Big Ten Championships on Saturday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb.

McGrath, an All-American, was the first Hawkeye to compete for a Big Ten title. On floor, he recorded a 15.100 and placed fourth. Chandler Eggleston of Illinois took home the floor title with a 15.725. On rings, McGrath recorded a 15.175 and tied for fifth with Minnesota’s Jack Metcalf.

Loochtan also competed on rings, tallied a 14.950 and placed ninth. Penn State’s Trevor Howard won the event as he recorded a 15.825.

Landau was Iowa’s lone competitor on horizontal bar. He tallied a 15.025 and finished fourth. Sean Melton of Ohio State won the event with a 15.375. Last year, Landau placed eighth at the 2013 Big Ten Championships in the event.

Sullivan represented the Hawkeyes on pommel horse as he recorded a 14.575 and placed fifth. Minnesota’s Ellis Mannon took home the event title with a 15.325.

Freshman Mark Springett was honored with the Sportsmanship Award for Iowa.

The 2014 NCAA Championships will take place April 10-12 at the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. National qualifiers begin on Thursday at 12 p.m. (CT), followed by team and all-around finals and individual event prelims on Friday at 6 p.m. (CT). The meet will conclude on April 12 with individual event finals at 6 p.m. (CT).
