FRENCH LICK, Ind. — The University of Iowa women’s golf team carded a 314 (+26) on Friday in the opening round of the 2014 Big Ten Championships at the award-winning Pete Dye Course. Iowa’s score was good for seventh place, finishing ahead of five Big Ten teams, including nationally ranked Wisconsin. After 18 holes, two Hawkeyes rank among the top-20.

“Today was a solid start for us,” said head coach Megan Menzel. “This course is demanding, and I think a few shots got away from us on the greens and with a few errant shots.”

Freshman Allison Lindley led the Hawkeyes with a score of 76 (+4). The Indiana-native tied for 12th.

“I felt good about my round today,” said Lindley. “I had a good game plan, and I am confident with the way I am hitting the ball. The team got off to a good start, and we have a good chance to move up the leader board the next two days.”

Senior Karly Grouwinkel recorded a 78 (+6) to tie for 20th on the leaderboard.

Freshman Jessie Sindlinger fired a 79 (+7) in the opening round. Sindlinger’s score tied for 28th place.

Sophomore Briana Midkiff tied for 44th with a score of 81 (+9).

Junior Shelby Phillips and sophomore Amy Ihm are tied for 64th. The Hawkeye duo both recorded an 87 (+15).

“We have to continue to be patient,” said Menzel. “Anything can happen our here, and I think we can compete at the top of the leaderboard this week.”

Competition resumes with the second round on Saturday at 8 a.m. (CT). The final round will be played on Sunday beginning at 7 a.m. (CT). Live scoring will be available at golfstat.com.
