FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Brittany Brown broke the 200 meters school record and the University of Iowa track and field team advanced five more events to the NCAA final site following day 3 of competition at the 2014 NCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships.
Brown, a native of Upland, California, broke her own 200 meters school record for the second time in as many days. The freshman clocked a 22.95 to finish third in her heat and punch her ticket to Eugene. Brown recorded the previous school record (23.11) in the 200 meters first round on Friday.
Brown also anchored the women’s 400-meter relay. Her and sophomore Lake Kwaza, freshman Elexis Guster, and sophomore MonTayla Holder crossed the line in 44.72 to finish third in their heat to earn an automatic trip to the final site.
The men’s 400-meter relay team punched their ticket to Eugene with a first-place finish in their heat. The team of senior Tevin-Cee Mincy, freshman O’Shea Wilson, sophomore James Harrington, and junior Keith Brown clocked a 39.55 to finish seventh overall.
“It was another weekend of great progress for the Hawkeyes,” said head coach Layne Anderson. “We will be well represented in Eugene, and the future of the program could not be in a better place than it is today.”
Junior Gabe Hull placed fifth overall in the men’s discus, recording a mark of 195-3 (59.53m). He advances to the NCAA finals for the second time in his career. Hull earned second-team All-America honors with a 15th-place finish in the event a year ago (184-6; 56.25m).
Babatunde Amosu punched Iowa’s final ticket to the NCAA Championships with a 12th place finish in the triple jump. Amosu recorded a leap of 51-3 ¾ (15.64m) on his final attempt to earn his ticket to Eugene.
After three days of preliminary round competition, the Hawkeyes advanced to the NCAA final site in eight events. In addition to today’s five event qualifiers, Zinnia Miller advanced in the long jump on Thursday and the triple jump on Friday, while MonTayla Holder advanced in the 400-meter hurdles on Friday.
“It was an exciting weekend for us,” said director of track and field Larry Wieczorek. “We are taking an exciting group of individuals to the finals. Overall, we became a better track and field team this weekend.”
The University of Oregon will host the NCAA Championships from June 11-14.
