IOWA CITY, Iowa — Afternoon start times for two University of Iowa nonconference home games and an 11 a.m. CT, kickoff for the season-opening contest against Northern Iowa highlight the Hawkeyes’ first three games of the 2014 season, scheduled to begin Saturday, Aug. 30 at Kinnick Stadium. The Big Ten Conference announced start times of selected games Wednesday, including Iowa’s opening three games of the season.
Along with the opening game against the Panthers, Iowa will host both Ball State and Iowa State in nonconference play and those two contests will each have a 2:30 p.m. CT start time. BTN will televise the Northern Iowa contest, while ESPN2 will televise the Ball State game. The annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Trophy game will be televised by ABC, ESPN or ESPN2.
Following the three-game home stand to open the season, Iowa concludes nonconference play at Pittsburgh (Sept. 20) before opening Big Ten play at Purdue (Sept. 27). Big Ten home opponents include Indiana (Oct. 11, Homecoming), Northwestern (Nov. 1), Wisconsin (Nov. 22) and Nebraska (Nov.28).
Season tickets, three-game ticket packages, and single game tickets to all seven home games are available at can be purchased at the UI Athletics Ticket Office in Carver-Hawkeye Arena, over the phone at 1-800 IA-HAWKS, and online at hawkeyesports.com. UI students are reminded that the deadline to purchase their 7-game or 6-game season ticket is Friday, Aug. 1.
The Hawkeyes return 14 starters (8 offense, 5 defense, 1 specialist) among 39 lettermen from the 2013 squad that posted an 8-5 overall record. Iowa tied for second in the Legends Division (5-3) a year ago and earned an invitation to the 2014 Outback Bowl.
Iowa and Northern Iowa will meet for the first time since 2012, when the Hawkeyes won 27-16, also in Kinnick Stadium. The Panthers return 19 starters and 48 lettermen from their 2013 squad.
Ball State visits Kinnick Stadium for the first time since 2010, as the Hawkeyes have won both previous meetings. The Cardinals posted a 10-2 mark a year ago and played in the GoDaddy.com Bowl. Ball State returns 11 starters and 48 lettermen from a year ago.
Iowa captured the Cy-Hawk Trophy with a 27-21 win over Iowa State in Ames last season, and holds a 40-21 series advantage. Iowa State returns 17 starters and 39 lettermen from last season.
A start time of 11 a.m. CT, was previously announced for Iowa’s Homecoming contest against Indiana (Oct. 11) and road games at Purdue (Sept. 27) and Maryland (Oct. 18). Start times for all other Hawkeye games will be announced six to 12 days prior to the scheduled date.
Iowa opens fall practice on Monday, Aug. 4. The Hawkeyes will host Kid’s Day in Kinnick Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 16 (time TBA). Here is Iowa’s 2014 football schedule:
