IOWA CITY, Iowa – Five current University of Iowa students who purchase their 2014 Iowa football student season ticket will be rewarded with something that won’t just put a smile on their face, but on their parents’ as well: free tuition* for the 2014 Fall and 2015 Spring semester of classes at the UI.

The grand prizes are five of 11 that will be provided to randomly selected students after the Aug. 1 deadline for current UI students to place their season ticket order passes. Other prizes include one winner of an away game viewing party inside the Paul W. Brechler Press Box, one winner of up to $500 in free textbooks and supplies, and four winners of a $1,000 gift card to Hy-Vee.

Students were notified of the incentives in an email sent on Monday. The value of the free tuition is that required for in-state students at the UI which is approximately $8,000. Current UI students can purchase their season ticket online by clicking HERE.

“We want students in Kinnick Stadium, and the staff has spent the year listening and planning ways to increase the fun and excitement. A loud and active student section is such an important part of the game day experience,” said Gary Barta, the UI’s director of athletics.

The e-mail also outlined a game-by-game list of special activities being planned for UI students ranging from a variety of give-away items and free food to the first to arrive at Kinnick Stadium on game days to the opportunity to win additional prizes. The game day “UI Student Tailgate” will also include music, games (cornhole and more), body paint, and face tattoos exclusively for UI student season ticket holders.

“We are acting on the feedback we’ve received directly from students. They’ve told us they want to have some fun with their friends before the games and during the games, they want a chance to win prizes, they enjoy free food…so, we’re providing that opportunity in addition to an opportunity to cheer on a football program that is coming off an eight-win season and an invitation to another January 1 bowl game,” said Lisa Pearson, director of marketing for the UI Athletics Department.

Current UI students have two options when placing their 2014 student season ticket order: A 7-game ticket priced at just $25 per game. This option includes a ticket to all seven home games of the 2014 Iowa Hawkeyes. Students can also choose a 6-game season ticket. Also priced at just $25 per game, the 6-game student season ticket does not include a ticket to the Hy-Vee Heroes Game against Nebraska on Black (and Gold) Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.

*–Five winners of approximately $8,000 each to be randomly selected from all students who purchased 2014 Iowa football student season tickets by midnight, Friday, Aug. 1, 2014. The final amount awarded to each will be restricted to be used to further the educational pursuits of the recipients. This “qualified scholarship” will be used for qualified tuition and related expense such as tuition (full-time in-state student rate), fees, books, supplies, and required equipment per Internal Revenue Code Section 117(b). Payment will be split over the two semesters. Award is terminated should a winning student withdraws from the UI for one or both semesters.
