IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz announced the establishment of a personnel/recruiting division within the football program, consisting of several moves within the current staff.

Kelvin Bell has been named director of on-campus recruiting. Bell will assist in all aspects of prospect identification, assist the coaching staff in off-campus recruiting efforts and coordinate all aspects regarding on-campus recruiting activities.

Bell has served as a graduate assistant on the Hawkeye staff since 2012, assisting special teams coordinator Chris White and director of quality control Scott Southmayd. Prior to 2012, Bell served as offensive line coach at Trinity International University (March 2011 to July 2012), offensive graduate assistant coach at Wayne State College (March 2008 to Dec. 2009) and offensive line coach at Cornell College (Aug. 2006 to March 2008).

Max Allen has been hired as director of football new media. Allen will work closely with the Iowa staff regarding design and production of print and electronic recruiting materials, management of football specific social media, and work with athletics marketing regarding football specific activities.

Allen has served as a football administrative assistant with the Hawkeyes since July 2013. He previously was assistant director of player personnel at the University of Colorado (March 2011 to June, 2013), and football recruiting and operations assistant at Colorado during the 2010 season.

Southmayd, who has served on Ferentz’ staff for the past nine years as quality control director, will now serve as director of player personnel. Southmayd will work closely with recruiting coordinator Seth Wallace and Ferentz regarding all aspects of prospect identification, roster management, and on-campus recruiting.

“I am extremely excited to add Kelvin and Max to our staff,” said Ferentz. “Both will be tremendous assets to Scott and Seth, as well as our entire coaching staff regarding our collective recruiting efforts. Scott’s expanded role will make our prospect identification, evaluation, and roster planning process more efficient.”

Former Hawkeye Broderick Binns will serve as a graduate assistant in 2014, working primarily with special teams. Binns, a native of St. Paul, Minnesota, was a four-year letterman as a defensive end from 2008-11. He earned second team All-Big Ten honors as a senior and earned the Roy J. Carver Most Valuable Player Award for defense. Binns helped Iowa post a 3-1 bowl game record, including wins in the 2009 Outback Bowl, 2010 Orange Bowl and 2010 Insight Bowl.

The Hawkeyes open the 2014 season Aug. 30, hosting Northern Iowa (11 a.m., BTN) in the first of three consecutive home games in Kinnick Stadium.
