IOWA CITY, Iowa — It was a day both coaches and players had marked on their calendars. The University of Iowa women’s soccer team completed its first practice of the year earlier today at the UI soccer practice field.
“We’ve been waiting to get back at it since last fall,” said senior Caitlin Brown
The Hawkeyes return nine seniors for the 2014 season, including the top-two scorers from a year ago in Cloe Lacasse and Melanie Pickert. However, it features a new head Hawkeye in Dave DiIanni.
Brown and Lacasse say the new coaching staff has brought a new sense of competitiveness to the team.
“Everyone is really competing for each spot and everyone is starting fresh,” said Lacasse.
With the first practice now officially in the books, DiIanni says he came away pleased with his team’s effort.
“I was happy with the energy and effort, even more so the excitement,” he said. “For the first day, it’s new for everybody, not only the freshmen, but the upper classmen because it’s the first time they’ve been with me and our new staff. It’s still preseason, and we’re going to take every advantage we have to be able to become a team and come together.”
The Hawkeyes open up the season Aug. 14 with an exhibition at DePaul beginning at 4 p.m. (CT). The regular season opener is set for Aug. 22 at Northern Iowa.
