IOWA CITY, Iowa – – Former University of Iowa defensive lineman Mike Daniels will serve as honorary captain when the Hawkeyes host Northwestern on Saturday in Kinnick Stadium (11:01 a.m., BTN).
Daniels is currently in his third season with the NFL’s Green Bay Packers (5-3), who are idle this weekend. Daniels has started all eight games this season, recording 24 tackles and 2.5 sacks. He saw action in all 16 games in 2013 and played in 14 games as a rookie in 2012. Daniels was selected by the Packers in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL Draft.
Daniels recorded 37 tackles in 2013 and ranked second in the team with 6.5 sacks. His sack total tied for sixth in the NFL among defensive tackles. As a rookie he recorded 19 tackles and led the team with two recovered fumbles. His 43-yard fumble return for a touchdown vs. Detroit is the longest return for a touchdown by a rookie in franchise history. He was the first Packer rookie defensive lineman with a fumble return for a touchdown since 1941.
Daniels is a native of Blackwood, New Jersey (Highland Regional HS). As a three-year letterman with the Hawkeyes, Daniels helped Iowa win 35 games from 2008-11, including consecutive bowl victories over South Carolina (Outback), Georgia Tech (Orange) and Missouri (Insight). Iowa matched the school record for victories in 2009, posting an 11-2 overall mark.
Daniels was named second team All-Big Ten by league coaches as a senior after earning honorable mention recognition the previous year. He was named a permanent team captain and received the Iron Hawk Award while being invited to participate in the Senior Bowl. Daniels led the Hawkeyes in tackles for loss and QB sacks as both a junior (11-56, 4-31) and senior (13.5-63, 9-53). He was a member of Iowa’s Leadership Group as a senior.
Daniels will accompany the Iowa captains to the center of the field for Saturday’s pregame coin toss. He will also be with the Hawkeyes in the locker room before and after the game, and on the sidelines during the contest.
