Hawkeyes Complete 2nd Session for Shamrock Invite

SOUTH BEND, Indiana — The University of Iowa men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams capped the second session of the Shamrock Invitational on Saturday at the Rolfs Aquatic Center in South Bend, Indiana. The 19th ranked men’s team currently leads Incarnate Word (197-41), Notre Dame (132-107), and Missouri State (136-101). On the women’s side, Iowa leads Incarnate Word (178-53) and trails Notre Dame (183-56).

“We’re excited with the position we’ve put ourselves in and we’re looking for some fast racing tonight in the final session,” said UI head coach Marc Long.

On the men’s side, the foursome of Grant Betulius, Roman Trussov, Jerzy Twarowski, and Joseph Halsmer kept Iowa in control early with a win in the 200 medley. The quartet touched out with a time of 1:29.26.

UI freshman Chris Dawson and Jerzy Twarowski had strong showings in their respective individual events. Dawson had a third-place showing in the 400 IM (4:02.16) and Twarowski won the 100 fly touching out with a time of 48.19.

Roman Trussov and Grant Betulius extended the Hawkeyes’ lead with a pair of wins midway through the session. Trussov touched in at the 54.44 mark in the 100 breast and Betulius paced the field with a time of 48.15 in the 100 back.

The foursome of Chris Freeman, David Ernstsson, Twarowski and Betulius closed the second session on a high note with a win in the 800 free relay. The group swam to first-place time of 6:45.13.

On the women’s side, the Hawkeyes posted a pair of runner-up finishes in the 200 medley relay and 800 free relay. The foursome of Allison Orvis, Emma Sougstad, Carly O’Brien, and Meghan Lavelle scored the early points in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.24. The quartet of Izzie Bindseil, Becky Stoughton, Olivia Kabacinski, and Serena Wanasek posted the second of two in the final race — the 800 free relay (7:27.82).

Individually, Sougstad led the Hawkeyes with a third-place showing in the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.96. Becky Stoughton and Kabacinski also tacked on a pair of fourth-place finishes. Stoughton led Iowa in the 400 IM (4:23.12) and Kabacinski in the 200 free (1:53.53).

The Hawkeyes return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. (CT) at the Rolfs Aquatic Center in South Bend, Indiana.
