IOWA CITY, Iowa — Sales of season football tickets to students who will be first-year students at the University of Iowa are up 43 percent compared to a year ago, the UI Athletics Department announced today.

The vast majority of students who will be new to the UI when the Fall 2015 semester begins in late August participate in orientation sessions staged by the UI Admissions Office during the months of June and July. First-year students have an opportunity to learn about the wide variety of activities available on the UI campus at these orientation sessions including the opportunity to purchase discount-priced season tickets to the seven home games of the 2015 Iowa football team and the home events of the 2015-16 men’s basketball team.

The deadline for UI students to purchase their season football ticket and be guaranteed a seat in the student section at Kinnick is Friday, July 31. The UI Athletics Ticket Office will continue to sell season tickets to UI students after that date, but can’t guarantee that their seat location will be in the student section.

The UI Athletics Department has sold 1,226 season football tickets during the first 14 orientation sessions – an increase of 369 over the total for the first 14 orientation sessions of a year ago. Total sales during the summer orientation sessions could reach 2,444 – an increase of 1,078 over last season’s final total – if the average of 88 student season tickets sold per session continues through all 26 scheduled orientation sessions.

“We’re excited that the freshman class is eager to spend seven Saturdays at Kinnick cheering the football Hawkeyes. Their energy and enthusiasm is an important piece of the experience for everyone inside our football facility on game days including their peers on the playing field,” said Rick Klatt, associate athletics director for external relations.

The UI Athletics Department also sells student season tickets at the summer freshman orientation sessions. Sales of those season tickets are also up dramatically: Last year, the UI sold 534 men’s basketball student season tickets through the first 14 sessions. This year that total is 742 – an increase of 208 tickets (39 percent).

If the current pace of sales of 53 men’s basketball season tickets sold during each session continues, the UI will sell 1,378 men’s basketball season tickets to incoming freshmen. Last year’s total was 860.
