IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa freshman Christian Brissett and junior Madison Rouw were named Big Ten Track and Field Athletes of the Week by the conference office Wednesday. Brissett and Rouw were both recognized for their performances at the Baldy Castillo Invitational in Tempe, Arizona, on Mar. 19.
Brissett finished second in the men’s 400-meter relay (39.73), fourth in the 200 meters (20.98) and sixth in the 100 meters (10.43). He leads the conference in all three events and ranks in the top 10 nationally in the 100 (10th) and 200 (seventh) meters, and ran the second leg on the nation’s second-fastest 400-meter relay.
Rouw opened her season with a first-place finish in the women’s high jump with a personal-best 5-8 ¾ (1.75m). That mark leads the Big Ten, ties for sixth nationally, and ranks sixth in school history.
Rouw is the first Hawkeye woman to collect the weekly outdoor honor in the field events since Peaches Roach in 2007.
The weekly conference award is a career first for both Brissett and Rouw.
The Hawkeyes return to action April 1-2, splitting competitors for the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Florida, and the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, California. Iowa hosts it’s lone home meet, the Musco Twilight XVII, on April 23 at the Cretzmeyer Track.
