RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. — University of Iowa women’s golf signee Sophie Liu tied for 17th at the 2016 ANA Junior Inspiration on the Arnold Palmer Course at Mission Hills Country Club. The event allows aspiring amateurs across the United States to earn the final playing spot in the ANA Inspiration, the LPGA’s first Major.
Liu was one of ten amateurs invited from each of ANA’s gateway markets in North America: Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, Vancouver, Chicago, New York, Washington D.C., Houston, and Honolulu.
The Vancouver, British Columbia, native native carded a 76 (+4), adding birdies on hoes six and 18. Her round was highlighted by 12 holes at or below par.
Liu — who signed with the Hawkeyes on November 12 — is the 2015 Cape Coast Conference Individual Champion. She currently holds Viera High School’s (Florida) records for the lowest season average (72.0) and highest finish at a state competition (second). Liu also finished runner up at the 2015 U.S. Junior after firing rounds of 66 and 70.
This year, Liu has won two tournaments — the FSGA Girls Championship and a Florida Junior Tour event at Eagle Creek — and finished runner-up twice. In nine tournaments (22 rounds) in 2015, Liu owned a 75.4 stroke average.
