IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa volleyball team made its 2016 debut at the annual Black and Gold Scrimmage on Saturday afternoon in the practice facility at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Third-year head coach Bond Shymansky greeted the crowd to kick off the event before the Hawkeyes showed off their skills with some drills on the court. From there, the squad spilt in two and competed in a five-set match.

“It was really fun to play in front of Hawkeye fans for the first time,” said redshirt freshman transfer Meghan Buzzerio. “I loved getting the crowd going and seeing all the support we have behind us.”

Following the scrimmage, student-athletes signed autographs and met with Hawkeye fans in attendance.

“We had a great crowd today,” said senior Alyssa Klostermann. “That’s awesome to see, because we know we are going to have even more come out for our regular season. They brought a lot of energy today, and that gets us excited.”

Iowa opens the season Saturday, Aug. 27 at the Northern Illinois Invitational in DeKalb, Illinois.
