IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa junior midfielder Karly Stuenkel has been named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday by the league office. The honor is the first of Stuenkel’s career.
The St. Charles, Illinois, native earned the distinction after scoring three goals and adding an assist in leading the Hawkeyes to a pair of wins last week over Colorado State and SIU Edwardsville. The victories ran Iowa’s winning streak to five matches — the longest since 2013.
Stuenkel opened the weekend with a two goal performance in a 4-1 victory over Colorado State. It was her second career multi-goal game. She followed it up with a one goal, one assist output in Iowa’s 5-1 victory over SIUE. The five goals were the most for the team since 2012.
Through six contests, Stuenkel is leading the team with 11 points and her four goals are tied for the team-high. At a team, Iowa has a Big Ten-leading 18 goals and 54 points.
Stuenkel is the first Hawkeye to garner Offensive Player of the Week honors since Cloe Lacasse in 2014.
Iowa (5-1-0) returns to action Friday, traveling to Ames, Iowa, for an Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series matchup at Iowa State. Game time is set for 8 p.m. (CT).
