IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa forward Olivia Fiegel has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, it was announced Tuesday by the league office. It is the first honor of Fiegel’s career.
The Springfield, Virginia, native earned the distinction after scoring two goals on three shots in leading the Hawkeyes to a road split last weekend in games against Iowa State and Colorado.
Fiegel scored her first career goal — a game-winner — in Iowa’s 2-0 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series victory at Iowa State on Sept. 9. She followed it up by netting the team’s lone goal at Colorado on Sept. 11.
It is the second straight week Iowa has garnered weekly recognition. Junior Karly Stuenkel was the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 6. Fiegel is the first Hawkeye to garner Freshman of the Week honors since Alina Magruder during the 2015 season.
Iowa (6-2-0) returns to action Friday, hosting Michigan at 7 p.m. (CT) in its Big Ten opener. There will be a postgame fireworks show at the conclusion of the contest.
